“Urban acupuncture (UA) is metaphoric strategy, recently associated to tactical urbanism, that takes an East Asian concept of health (a transpacific exchange) linked to the idea of the city as a multi scale living organism. It dominates the approaches that aim to solve problems of urbanization in Latin America. As UA addresses the process of urbanization, instead of the production of the city, a critical perspective is lost, in terms of recognizing the issues that causes inequalities. It detaches the economic/political relationships of urbanization from materialistic aspects of environment, failing to provide better conditions translated into well-being. It also leaves out a whole comprehension of the city as takes part of the instrumentalization of urban policy increasing positivist and Eurocentric ways of thinking the Latin American city. The workshop proposes a revision of UA from a critical perspective. Three categories are proposed related to urban policy and to the way the city is thought in Latin America. Experiences from Latin America would be compared to South Korean perspectives of the city, under a transpacific similarity given by rapid urbanization and common issues shown during pandemic: The political, to address how UA still operates in the underestimation of planning reinforcing instrumentalization of urban policy. The ontological, to address the way UA, even coming from a metaphor of living organisms and health, fails to give better conditions to allow well-being. The theoretical, to address how urban acupuncture induces globalizing and non-critical ways to think and to operate in the Latin American city.”
